Final Review in Review

December 15, 2010
Its been just shy of a week since the final review; I wanted to wait a bit before posting about it just to let the completeness of studio really sink in.  (Well, that and being kept busy working on and finishing up the thesis prospectus and other final work).  But, after giving it some thought, I can say with confidence that it was a successful review for everybody.  Thinking about it, not one person had an underdeveloped project resulting in a not-so-good review.  The level of thought and work that everybody showed was rather impressive.  (Over the next month, the projects will be making it on to the website).

While I didn't take extensive notes on each presentation, I thought it might be best if I talked most about the critters.

In total, we had five guest critics:  Ivan Rupnik (currently a professor at Northeastern and has extensive knowledge about Sarajevo), Nadja Beglerovic (Resident Director for Triple-Five dormitory at WIT and from Sarajevo), Dunja Vujinic (freshman studio professor at WIT and originally from Bosnia), Irena Matulic (practicing architect in Boston and from Croatia), and Erblin Bucaliu (a fourth year architecture student at WIT and from Kosovo).  The above picture from left to right is of Ashley (presenting), Irena, Erblin, and Ivan.

Overall, the critics, all having a background with Sarajevo, were helpful giving us all feedback on our projects.  It took a bit for things to get rolling, but after some time, it was difficult getting them to stop.  The shining star of the jury was Ivan, who always had plenty to say for every project.  (I'm not entirely sure about the length, but while critting Phil and Joe, he gave them a short 20 minute lecture on planning).

Head to the photo gallery to see pictures from the review.  The order in which we presented was:  Ashley, Anthony + Chelsea, Amanda, Phil + Joe, Adam, Zack, Jen.  Surprisingly, for only having 9 people to present, the crit lasted longer than we all thought it would, ending at approximately 5:30.

And a special thanks to our friends from Sarajevo, making it to the crit via Skype!  Thank you Jasmina, Dino, Emir, and Emina!  It was definitely appreciated.

And as I said before, great work done by all!

The Final Countdown

December 9, 2010
Today's the day!  After months of grueling hard work on our projects we're all finishing up and getting ready to present.  According to Andy, we will be having six reviewers coming in to crit us (names to come later).  The past few weeks have been stressful, as usual when heading towards any deadline; every day has consisted of long nights and early mornings.  I find it scary how quickly the semester has come and gone, it seems like there should always be another day or two just to put the f...

Week of Nov 15

November 22, 2010
Monday, as always, was a working session.  As usual, Andy came around to each of us, either individually or in groups, and chatted with us about the development of our projects.  Theres definitely a solid amount of work piling, its just a matter of making everything coherent.  Andy talk with us as a large group as well, stressing the importance of having all of our final work in mind as we head into Thanksgiving Break.  Meaning, of course, that even if we don't have everything started, we sho...

Week of November 1

November 8, 2010
We spent monday as a working session.  Andy had us do small group desk crits and/or pinups.  He is constantly re-asking us a series of questions during these desk crits and pinups.  They are:  What are your goals? and How is does what your doing relate to your goals?  These questions force us to constantly think about what we're doing and making sure its the correct move to make.

Thursday was used as a full-class crit day (kind of like a midcrit, but not as intense).  We gathered around our wa...

Week of October 25

November 3, 2010
Monday was a fairly easy going day, we all spent the day diligently working on our projects.  We pinned up in our window groups and chatted with Andy for a fair amount of time about how our projects were developing and thinking about the overall goal of the project and what it brings to the city.  After the conversations, we all had plenty to think about and build upon.

Thursday was great!  Ben, Andy's four-year-old son, came in for a visit at about 4 pm.  He spent his time going around to eac...

Back to the Grind

October 20, 2010
A week after we get back and things are pretty easy going.  However, as the saying goes, its always calm before the storm.  Andy is expecting us to all take control of the semester by creating our own individual project outline.  This is basically a project proposal for the rest of the semester.  This has the ability to turn our very good or very bad for us.  Its entirely up to us to make what we want work as its its all student driven; we get out what we put into it.

Like most of the other st...

Travel Week Through the Eyes of Chelsea

October 19, 2010
Although a few of us were not so lucky and had to stay in Boston for travel week, we still got to see much of the students in Sarajevo and our fellow studio-mates via Skype! Each day the four of us met in Studio to Skype with our new (and old) friends in Bosnia. They had a lot of great information to give us about their city and did a wonderful job explaining it so that we could understand it while in Boston. To get a "real" feel for the city we watched a few videos and looked at pictures pos...

Friday travel day is so close we can almost taste it!!

Week 3: Sept 20 - 24

September 25, 2010
Monday, Laurent came in again to further our knowledge about Bosnia.  His focus was about things that have been happening post-war. Probably the most interest aspect of the current situation is that the country is still somewhat divided into three different political systems that control different areas.

Week 2: Sept 13-17

September 20, 2010
Monday, Andy brought in a guest speaker, Laurent Richard, to give us a brief history of Sarajevo.  Laurent covered from the inception of the city after the split of the Roman Empire to the end of the Bosnian War of the mid-1990s.  He was a member of Guernica, an NGO that was dedicated to provide help to all those displaced during the war obtain compensation so that they can go back to their lives.

Thursday was split up into two parts.  The first part of the class was used as a pin-up to talk...
