The Forgotten Path
Window 2 was an extremely rich area in terms of program that was already there. It had everything it needed to become a great city center just no structure relating it together. With three strong horizontal bands of circulation, I wanted to focus on bringing people down the north/south axis. I identified the campuses as the strongest places to improve this axis and worked from there. The major problems I recognized on campus were the lack of open green spaces, the ally-like conditions the low-lying buildings created, and the lack of circulation pull through campus. To fix these problems I filled in areas, redeveloped parking lots into green spaces, and designed a main promenade that pulled you through the campus. My main goal was to work with what was there, keeping ideas from the old, but give the campus a more institutional feel. In the second campus area to the south I wanted to create a connection to the pedestrian path to the back, design a plaza that would bring the variety of program in the area together, and disguise the undesirable in the space to activate the area. To solve these problems I continued the promenade through this area to the pedestrian path to the back. I liked the new commercial and the old institutional I designed a park at the middle to act as a common ground. And to disguise the undesirable I added green walls. My main goals in this area were to activate an open space that was unused and bridge the gap between new and old. Problems with campus area: ![]() |
